Periodontal Disease is the name given to Gum Disease. This inflammatory Disease attacks the gums, bones and other supporting structures; thus limiting their ability to protect teeth.
At its most basic level, Periodontal Disease is an infection of the gum tissue in between teeth. The small v-shaped portion of gum in between teeth is called the sulcus, which is a breeding ground for tartar and bacteria. An infection of this tissue can cause gums to recede. As a result, the attachment of the gums to the teeth is broken and a pocket is formed. The severity of Periodontal Disease is proportional to the size of the pocket created.
Symptoms of Periodontal Disease include;
- Bleeding gums whilst brushing or flossing your teeth
- Pain while chewing
- Red, sore, swollen gums
- Build up of calculus (tartar)
- Bad breath or bad taste
- Loss of teeth
- Teeth sensitivity to hot and cold
- Changes in bite
- Gums that have withdrawn from teeth and in between teeth
The diagnosis of Periodontal Disease can be made through an oral examination with us. Within this consultation x-rays would be taken and the depth of the pockets measured. At Palm Beach Dental we place a strong emphasis on the treatment and diagnosis of Periodontal Treatment.
